In one of the greatest feats in the history of sports, Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter on June 12, 1970 against the San Diego Padres. Leading the Pirates to a win by itself is a great feat, but this was one of the greatest feats in sports history because Dock Ellis pitched the entire game under the influence of LSD.
DBSF readers familiar with P.G. County history can attest that there was a brief moment in time when Planet X Coffee House and Howie’s arcade existed amicably as neighbors. What they can also attest to is that this weird marriage produced a group of people in Doc Ellis’ “condition,” and they could not distinguish the left and right flippers on a pinball machine, let alone pitch a no-hitter, against major league batters, in front of a crowd of 30,000 people.
